OOC: Holiday, September 1891, Information [version #002]

[still staying offline, so this was copied from 3 e-mails typed on my RAZR]

The Place:
Frampton-on-Severn is the riverside village where Cass` house is. Google Maps has it street level-able, but it is pretty much a country village with the longest village green in England. There are 3 duck ponds on it, and a public house at either end.

Cass lives in an upper middle-class 2 1/2 story brickfaced house with white/pink hydrangeas out front. Several bedrooms, a less than 10 year-old bathroom with running water, with a secondary ashpit in the fenced in large backyard. Out there is also a tree Cass calls "Mama`s tree" planted by their mom before she died. And a swing, & ill kept flower and veg garden "A*****`s project". The house is full of heavy wood furniture, rugs and very clean. A portrait at the top of the stairs of a young couple. Polly would be staying upstairs in a semi-dated room, all done in blue with shelves of books. Cass` old room, since Robert and Flora are off in a guest room with their parents. In the corner is a lightweight wheelchair and a bin of several canes. And on the green in town is a festival. Probably just pony rides, and carnival games + food. Bonfire and dances too. |

The people:
Frederick Lumbry->A brown haired, blue eyed, middle aged well off merchant. Cass` uncle, & basically their dad. Him & Mila are visiting from Gloucester |

Mila->Frederick`s housekeeper/best-friend & who raised Cass. Middle aged, mousey haired blue eyed woman. Well built, with soft smiles. |

Robin->Brother-in-law, but might as well be brother. Strawberry blond, green eyed. Cheerful, and kinda boyish. |

Elise->Robin`s wife. Very ladylike, but somewhat frail. Brown hair, blue eyes. |

Robert->strawberry blond, blue eyes with spectacles. Typical 9 year-old. Wants to be an explorer. Has a large fluffy dog named Hattie. |

Flora->auburn hair, green eyes. Smart for her 6 years. Loves animals, recently really into bats. Secretly wants to be a detective when she grows-up, like her aunt & uncle. |

Rupert Harker->manservant/butler. Youngish man, kinda based on Ronald Knox from "Kuroshitsuji" >_>;

A Letter to Gabriel Morgan -- April 29th 1891

 Mr. Morgan,

I have not had a chance to see you since Christmas time, and after talking about your teashouse many times during this trip, I have decided to write you a letter, even if it might not be 'proper' to send such an unexpected correspondence.

You may be wondering how I am getting along. I am sure you have heard rumours, and perhaps Anna has mentioned seeing me in the teahouse a few times. But I have been doing some of the most excellent that I have in the past three years. I am actually writing this letter while in a dirigible flying over the Irish Sea. Yes, the Irish Sea. I am find it it difficult to believe that I have just been to Ireland myself! I had a letter to see delivered, and after going-over contacts with my brother-in-law, I decided to do as my late-partner would do, and thus caught a flight to Belfast. I am glad that I did, even merely for the look on the woman's face. She had for the past year believed her son to be dead, and her & her husband even had a grave for him. I was asked by this boy-Louis Plumb-to get a letter to her explaining what had happened, and now am returning to London with a care-package for him.

This letter was not my only reason for going Above ground, of course. My sister-in-law is ill and had requested for me to visit her. I spent around a week in Suffolk & Essex with them, and then a few days at my own home in Gloucestershire. I know that these are all places that you have only heard about, and must seem like strange lands. But I am returning to London now, in any case. And I will certainly be making visits into your teahouse again.

I hope that you are at least in good health,

A Letter to Scarlet Fenwick -- April 27th 1891

 Scarlet,

When you were away from London, you thought to send me a letter. I did not expect it, but it made me feel thought of. And so, I am thinking to send you a letter of my own. I at first thought of writing you from a town called Walton-on-the-Naze, which is a lovely place by the sea. And then again while on the way from Cambridge. But instead I am writing you while in my very own study. Well not exactly just mine, but I am writing you from my home. Our little study inquiry agent office, in Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire county.

I was in Bristol the day before yesterday. I must let you know that I contacted who you gave me references for. I did not plan to go by 'L.S. Cassius' while up here, but my references as such seem to be far more 'pretentious' than what I could have waved about on my own, so it was very fitting. I will not say who I met with, due to the post being routinely searched, but I will say that I had as neat of an appearance as I could manage when I did. I dressed and carried myself with the same manner that I did upon meeting one that I would become rather Reliable for. I even bought a tin of solution to slick my hair back professionally.

I considered not making contact with this person, and once my train arrived in Bristol, while eating a parcel of proper fried fish, I finally decided to set-up an appointment. The letters of reference were already prepared--would it not seem suspicious if they were never used as intended? Would it be worse to use them? With Elise's course of treatment seeming to just be "rest", I used the letter of introduction you gave me. Robin is a detective inspector for the Cambridgeshire Constabulary, so if there is any real problems with this contact, then I am most certain that he can handle it.

I would like to offer much gratitude for the whole basket you gave to me. The sunglasses, which I was there when you received, and for you to give them to me of all people. Well I do not know what to say to you, besides "thank-you". I wore them the first day, but I suppose I enjoyed the pain from seeing sunlight again far too much. I will treasure them. Such a gift was completely unexpected, I think that I should give you that, but I will treasure them.

A Letter to Louis Plumb -- April 27th 1891

 Dear Louis Plumb,

I am writing to you today from my very own study. Well it was my partner's and mine, and because of my partner is why I have something to write to you.

Robin and me I have located your mother in Belfast. She is still working for the Copernics, and Mr. Copernic is still a watchmaker. But his business has grown considerably and he now has a proper shop and several workers at it. I must thank-you again for providing so much information in order to make this task much easier! Your mother is doing well as far as we were able to find out. Robin and me I spent a whole night trying to think and suggest contacts of ours for who to deliver your letter to her. All during it, all I could think of is how my partner would handle it. And it is because of the obvious answer to that, I am going to deliver your letter in person.

I had planned to be back in London late Friday evening, but I have booked a flight to Belfast instead. I will only be there a few hours, but it will be long enough to give her your letter and take a reply with me, if she should have one. So I would like for you to let Nathan, and Narciso know that I will not be back until Sunday or Monday now. I had wrote them before I decided on extending my trip, and I do not wish to cause them worry when I do not arrive as expected.

I hope all is well, or as well as it can be in The 'Neath.

A Letter to Asher Wilsford -- April 26th 1891

 Dearest Asher,

You are most likely not expecting a letter from me, and thus I apologise if it is unwelcome. I had wished to try to bring you a gift, and I would certainly buy you fruit back in London, but as for something from this trip, I will offer this letter.

I would like to offer a thank-you for coming to the small party, or 'Party' as Narciso wrote it. I was not expecting such a large gathering and it was very thoughtful for you to attend. After singing with the Commodore, I do not remember all too much of the night, but I think in some way that means that it was successful.

I know that you like animals so I will tell you that my nephew Robert now has a 'Pyrenean Mountain Dog'. A large, thick-furred, cream-coloured creature, as big as he, himself, is! Her name is Hattie. I cannot keep-up with the them, but I have enjoyed sitting and watching her and the children race and tear about. I am not sure that I have mentioned my niece and nephew to you before. Flora is 5 years-old, and Robert is 8 years-old. I can tell you more on them if you wish, but I do not wish to send you a letter rambling about them if you do not.

How is Teddy? I still have yet to meet him, and I have yet to introduce you to Saunder either. Saunder is my little brown bat. And how is Honoria and her own weasel Knives? 'Five, and a stiletto in the hair.' I think I am more fond of the teasing than the information itself. I should mention that I am rather glad that you and her have been getting-along well. I am sorry I was not much help during the Feast of the Exceptional Rose if you had needed it. But I do hope that the dance went well.

I hope that all is well, with you, and with everything. Or at least as well as things can be in The 'Neath.

A Letter to Narcisa -- April 24th 1891

My dearest Narcisa,

I am writing you a letter today from the seashore! I have just finished writing a letter to Nathan from this same exact chair, and I think I might venture to stay in it as long as I am allowed. I am even wearing a bathing costume! It is navy, and if I had reason, I would consider bringing it back down with me. But do not worry! I am still being respectable, and have secluded myself away from most prying eyes while in it. Lounging in a chair, in a bathing costume, by the sea. But it is only spring, and I am freezing, my legs and arms all goose-pimpled, and despite the lovely chair, I may have to go back inside soon. I apologise if this writing is shaky because of it.

We have moved to a place called Walton-on-the-Naze, as the sea air is supposed to be good for one's health. It has made me feel better, so I hope that it helps poor Elise. She has seemed to improved somewhat since I first saw her, and a new doctor has been attending her. I hope that she recovers, and the worry and fear in Robin is all too familiar, edging on to the grief of losing one's spouse, each day she is ill. But this is a letter from Above ground, and I should not be writing on anything but good or strange things.

So you may go back to picturing me, sprawled out in this comfortable wicker chair, in a navy bathing costume, trying to look relaxed even while alone, and yet shivering. Flora, Robert, Hattie and Robin have gone off to swim-swimming machines are rather silly, I might add-and I have carried this chair all the way down the beach to be alone and write. Perhaps I will go swimming tomorrow, but for now the sun hitting off the water is lovely, even if the air is still rather cold.

Lastly, I wish to tell you that you do not need to be 'strong' for me. I said that I would miss you "smile, or not", and if you had, or even if I had, cried, I still wish I had tried harder to see you the day I left. I think once again we were being fools. It is not being 'brave' to not cry, and it certainly was not brave for me to rush out of your bed in the morning to not upset you when you on waking. But also you should know that Nathan did come to see me off, I was not alone, and I plan for you to be one of the first people I see Friday or Saturday.

A Letter to Nathan Attford -- April 24th 1891

 Dearest Mr. Attwood,

I am writing you today from the seashore! Yes, the Essex seashore. This is my first time being upon it, being more familiar with the Western coast & even Southern France than it. But it is lovely. Cold, being still April, but still lovely. Much better than the Zeeshore, in any case. I might be thought mad for for dragging a wicker chair to an isolated area along that, even more so while wearing a bathing costume and carrying a small lap desk. But here I just must seem like someone on holiday wishing to write home. It is not exactly a holiday, but when I am not needed I can certainly take time to try and enjoy what little I can.

Last night I woke, and went for a foolish barefooted walk along the beach. I know how foolish it was to go out in the middle of the night, barefoot, in just my nightshirt and robe, but I still did. I pocketed a seashell, and I even stood in the waves, letting them lap about my toes. It was so cold! I was shivering by the time that I came inside, and my niece met me and-even at 5 years old-had the sense to ask where my shoes were. I adore her; I feel the need to exclaim. Even if she does remind me of my [scribble] spouse so. The same bright green eyes, and auburn hair. So smart, and gentle. I adore Robert as well, but he is often more interested in reading, or playing with Hattie to want to spend time with me. Which reminds me! Mr. Coppercrow suggested purchasing them children's velocipedes, and I did so. We went riding around Haverhill, and attempted to make it back to Elise's parents'. I had to stop and carry Flora, but Robert had the energy to make it all the way, and to spend several hours after just going around the road in. I could not help but be proud of him.

Elise is also seemingly doing somewhat better. She at least has more spirit about her. I am still planning on leaving very late tomorrow night, in any case. First to Cambridge to visit the memorial, and then taking several trains far to the West. I hope to be back in London by Friday or Saturday. With hope Bar will also be back as well.

All the best, and be mindful,

A Letter to Gabriel Coppercrow -- April 22th 1891

[the writing is a bit shaky in places, but it has been wrote while travelling by train]

 Mr. Coppercrow,

Your suggestion of children's velocipedes was one that I am very glad to have received. I took my niece & nephew into town this morning and purchased them both wheeled contraptions in their sizes. I was worried that Flora might be too young and small for one, but I managed to find one with three wheels and thus I do not have to worry about the balancing problem. We spent half the day together going around the town and even ventured to ride back to my sister-in-law's parents' home on them. I ended-up having to carry Flora and to send servants to collect the velocipedes when we got back, but Robert peddled all the way. He even had the energy to go back out after lunch and go around the road, accompanied by his dog Hattie. I have arranged for the vehicles to be shipped to Robin's home in Cambridge while we are at the sea.

As for how I have been doing, I have been exceedingly well. Even Elise seems to perked-up some, though I worry for how worried Robin is. We are one our way to a resort town called Walton-on-the-Naze right now, in any case. I am actually writing this to you while on the train. I hope all is well, and I would like to ask you on a strange woman that seems to be of 'your sort', that I met last week. She kept tea in her hair.

A Letter to Nathan Attford -- April 21th 1891

 Dearest Nathan Attwood,

I have arrived safely, and am sitting here in a room that Robin has commandeered as his study. I had not had much of a chance to meet Elise's parents before now, and perhaps it is good that I am finally having a chance to. Robin's parents-my own mother and father-in-law, are far less likely to see me during this visit. But I have decided that if she-Elise-is doing a bit better I will in fact travel West for a few days. I have written Uncle to come down to Frampton on Severn, in any case.

As for what I have been doing, I have been sitting with Elise at times. She has seemed to feel better since I have arrived, but I hope the trip to Walton-on-the-Naze does not tire her too much. I have also been playing with Flora, Robert, and Robert's 'Pyrenean Mountain Dog' Hattie. I cannot keep up with them for the most part, but they are lovely to watch go about. I did end-up sleeping on the lawns yesterday, however. And besides planing for the trip East, Robin and I have been working on locating and delivering a letter to Louis Plumb's mother. It is strange to work on a case with him again, and very out of sorts lacking our usual third party member.

Mentioning Louis Plumb, I did send him a letter two days ago (as of this writing). I wonder if he has received it yet? I also sent Narciso one the day after. If you do not mind, would you be willing to see if my letters have been received and perhaps visit my little brown bat? I know the mail system is prone to being searched and raided, so if they have not I would like to know when I return. I am also including the addresses for where I will be staying at next, and my home address if you should wish to write me a letter in reply.

I hope that you are well, and that Bar will have returned safely by the time that I do. Give my regards to Pepper and Mrs. Williams, and Bar if he is back.

A Letter to Narciso -- April 20th 1891

My dearest Narciso,

Well I shall hope you are still mine, and perhaps I like to hope that I am at least missed. It has only been three days since I saw you last, but this should take a day or so to arrive, and even then, I should like to hope that I am missed. And if you should like to hope the same, then I can confirm that you are. Very much so.

It is night-time here now, but I spent the day out on the lawns, and a part from sleeping, I found my thoughts falling to you. Yes, I fell asleep on the lawn. The grass still is not quite brilliant green, still that pale green and yellow. But not the light brown of winter. And there are flowers. Laying out on the grass, all dressed in blue--Robert and Flora off playing with Hattie. Hattie is a 'Pyrenean Mountain Dog' that Robert was given for his last birthday. Large, thick furred creature, as big as Robert himself is! But I was laying on the lawn, just moments from sleep when I wished terribly that you could be there with me.

I know that it would not be quite the same, and I hesitate on this, but I think that I would like to try sharing a dream with you. Prisoners Honey makes me uneasy, but I think I would accept the risk for this. It did not always, and I have even used sharing for investigations, but you have seen the vial about my neck so you should know why it scares me now. I do not dare write its name for fear that this letter will be read before it reaches you, but what was in the vial and the experience still sometimes lingers. Almost the same not remembering I have with the Fingerkings. So I avoid Honey for fear of losing control of that lingering. And yet I would not be alone. So, perhaps.

[there a lot that has been written, scratched out, and written, making a whole paragraph of scribbles]

I also seem to have left my suit jacket in your sitting room. I must request that you take good care of it. You were right that I wore it just for you, and I am fond enough of it to want to wear it more than that one night. And you may keep the plum jerkum bottle that I also left. It was a gift from Uncle and Mila, but one that you may keep as a momento. You may not keep Saunder, however! I do hope you are taking care of my little brown bat, in any case. Even if it is silly, Nathan is looking after Bar's pet goldfish while he is also away, so perhaps you two should visit? I did mean my suggestion that you and Nathan should spend time together. My love and my most favourite of artists.

But Flora has requested to sit on my lap so I will end this letter here. I do hope to write you again, and I will include the address where I will be staying next if you wish to send one in reply.

I love you.

A Letter to Louis Plumb -- April 19th 1891

[this has been written on the stationary that Scarlet gave them, and it arrives in a cream-coloured, double sealed envelope from Haverhill, Suffolk]

Dear Mr. Louis Plumb,

I have just arrived, and already my brother-in-law and myself have been working to locate your mother in order to deliver the letter. It is strange working with him on a case again, and out of sorts that we are missing our third party member. [a large ink blot] My late-partner that is. [another blot] We are currently trying to work-out contacts that we can trust enough to deliver such an important and personal letter.

But this should be a proper letter, with hope.

My nephew, Robert, got a dog for his birthday last year which he has named 'Hattie'. She is a great, big creature, around the same size that he is. Robin has just informed me that she is a 'Pyrenean Mountain Dog'. I am sure that you will be able to find illustrations or a cabinet card of one, but she is light-coloured and very fluffy. Very thick fur!

I really do wonder if Manisha could come up here. Perhaps not to Haverhill, but Above ground. I also plan to ask the Tiger Keeper if he knows anything about her when I see him next. My niece, Flora really loves animals and I wish that her and Manisha could meet. Also while mentioning your shopkeeper, I have written Uncle to ask if he could procure some dried catmint for me. I really hope that she will like it if I manage to bring some back.

That 'putt putt' boat has been claimed by Robin. And he has plans to try it in a duckpond tomorrow. He thinks that it is a brilliant contraption, and reading over my shoulder now has started going on about it again. [a line where they have suddenly turned away from him] I also gave Elise those flowers. She adores them, and since she has not been able to get out to see many of the new blooms, she has set it on her bedside table. I think just seeing them has perked her up some.

But the mail cart has arrived, and if this has hope of being received by you as soon as it can, then I had better seal this and send it off. Please send my regards to Manisha and perhaps Mrs. Williams if you should have tea with her before I return.

Message by Bat to Narciso -- April 10th 1891

After sending a raven off to Nathan, and after climbing back to their shack, Cassius sits down with their stomach churning. "How do I tell Narciso?" Burying their head in their hands. They know this will be the most difficult, not wanting him to think they are leaving for good-abandoning him-and also worrying how he will react. They wake their little brown bat up from his nap and hold him in their hands. "I have an important message for you to send" a worried look as they pat between his ears.

"I have something to tell you. Maybe two things. Please come up to my roost?---Cass 'your little bird'"

They are too anxious to care if Nathan and Narciso arrive at the same time, perhaps it will be easier? Fully clothed, Cassius flops back into their bed and waits for either person to reply.

Message by Raven to Nathan -- April 10th 1891

After receiving a letter from their brother-in-law, and after the contents of said letter have set in, Cassius thinks about how to tell their companions. The first person they know they have to tell is the most sensible person they know...perhaps not 'sensible', but he is the most level-headed friend that they have.

Bundling-up they go to street-level to rent a bat or a raven., deciding to send Saunder to the other person they know that they have to tell. What they find is an almost 'proper' coloured raven, the cloud of soot dust making Cassius cough. Still they send it off to a Mr. Nathan Attford's residence--Almost chuckling at the thought of him dealing with the soot covered bird.

"I have something I must tell you." They pause at how to make it sound less dire. "Please bring something to go with tea.---Cassius"

Shaking, Cassius climbs back up to their shack and waits for some sort of reply.

[If you want to play it on Twitter or here it doesn't matter! AND no hurry what-so-ever!]
